Wireless Carrier Cingular has announced that its 3G mobile broadband network has now extended to Rhode Island. This is probably very good news for the people living there who will no longer need wired connections for broadband access for information.

Cingular's 3G network is the first available service in the world to use HSPDA technology and its coverage area in the state spans from Pawtucket to North Smithfield in the north and from Barrington, Warwick and East Coventry in the south. Apart from advanced wireless services such as viewing video clips, Cingular's 3G will also make the existing services faster.

"We're giving customers the ability to securely access information and applications at broadband speeds in the office, on the road or at home. With our 3G service, almost any spot in northern Rhode Island is a hot spot," said Steve Krom, vice president and general manager for Cingular in New England.

Business users will also benefit from this. Through Cingular's LaptopConnect, the company's customers will be able to use their laptops to access the Internet or email, download large files and attachments at average data speeds between 400-700bps on the downlink.

Cingular's 3G coverage area includes the following towns: North Smithfield, Woonsocket, Cumberland, Smithfield, Lincoln, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Gloucester, Scituate, Johnston, North Providence, Providence, East Providence, Cranston, Warwick, Barrington, Coventry, and West Warwick.

In the meantime, Cingular's rebranding to AT&T has begun. Through an awareness campaign - which will include inserts with monthly bills and promotional materials at Cingular stores - customers from all over the world, including those in Rhode Island will get to see the Cingular brand slowly being replaced by the AT&T name.
