OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform)- the operator led community that sets recommendations for service enablers on mobile devices - has recently expanded to welcome Cingular Wireless, the largest carrier in the US, as its newest operator member. This latest addition will allow OMTP to more comprehensively target the US market for devices.

Cingular Wireless joins Hutchison 3G, KPN, Orange, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, T-Mobile and Vodafone as Operator Members. Certicom, Jaluna, Trango Systems, Openwave and Access are other new additions to the OMTP community that currently supports over 50 companies representing every part of terminal development.

Tom Keathley, Vice President, Technology and Standards at Cingular Wireless observed "The world cellular community is increasingly addressing common issues. Terminal enabler requirements are one such area and OMTP has proved its ability to produce terminal requirements with strong industry support".

Tim Robertson, VP of Industry Relations at Orange said "OMTP is an organization which really brings benefits by defining recommendations which enable and improve the services for our customers. OMTP continues to grow and to build momentum in new regions and Orange is very pleased to welcome Cingular Wireless into the organization".

OMTP's recommendations for service enablers are produced with industry wide support and the overall aim of simplifying service deployment to benefit the end user. OMTP has three focus areas: Device Management, Security and Usability. Within the last year it has completed and published eleven recommendations. A further two documents have been made available for industry review and guidance.
