There’s somewhat of a consensus among users that Chrome is already delivering top performance, but Google is not resting on its laurels. The Mountain View-based search giant is currently testing a new release of its open source browser with fresh optimizations designed to make it even faster. The Dev Channel for Chrome 15 has been updated and is serving a new Build to early adopters. Testers running Windows, Mac OS X or Linux can download Chrome 15.0.865.0 Dev and take the new release out for a spin immediately.

In conjunction with Chrome 15.0.865.0 Dev, Google is making available another Dev Channel Build, Chrome 15.0.865.1000, which is only offered to Windows testers.

“We are doing a performance experiment on Windows only. Some users will get 15.0.865.1000. This version is identical to 865.0 in features but has different optimizations,” revealed Dharani Govindan, from the Google Chrome team.

The Mountain View company has not specified exactly what are the performance optimizations introduced in Chrome 15.0.865.1000 Dev, or how exactly will early adopters be able to download the Build.

However, making the jump to Chrome 15.0.865.0 Dev appears to be the first step toward Chrome 15.0.865.1000 Dev.

As it’s usually the case, Chrome 15.0.865.0 Dev sports additional enhancements and bug fixes, including:

“When downloading a file with illegal trailing characters in the file name, they are replaced rather than truncated,” Govindan added.

A new version of the V8 JavaScript engine shipped with Chrome 15.0.865.0 Dev, namely Build 3.5.8.0, as Google continues to focus on taking JS to the next level.

Govindan enumerated additional changes, including: “Fixed some downloads crashers occurring due to over-aggressive consistency checks. Print Preview is working once again. Fixed issue where turning on sync encryption could remove bookmark titles.”
