Half a century ago, one man left the Earth atmosphere and became the first human to travel in space. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin entered the history books on April 12, 1961.

His pioneering flight set the stage for the wonderful things to come, most of them in the same decade.

His achievement inspired humankind since, but perhaps no one can attest more to his legacy than someone who's also an astronaut, better yet, one who's still in space.

Chris Hadfield is nearing the end of his six-month stay aboard the ISS, but he's not done connecting with us mortals back on Earth.

He's put together a very special message for Yuri's Night, a celebration of that first voyage and of the beauty and importance of space exploration. He's not the only one, Yuri's Night is slowly becoming a tradition.
