According to a report from China’s National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team / Coordination Center (CNCERT/CC), the country has seen a considerable rise in the number of malicious programs that target mobile devices.

Over 162,000 mobile malware samples were identified by CNCERT/CC and IT security firms last year, 25 times more than in the previous year, China Daily reports.

Of all the pieces of malware identified by experts, 82.5% targeted the Android platform.

CNCERT/CC representatives say the malicious applications are usually distributed via app stores, forums and other websites that offer downloadable content.

The agency also reports that over 16,000 Chinese websites were hacked in 2012, a 6.1% increase compared to 2011.

In addition, 52,324 websites were found to serve malware, including 3,016 that belong to the country’s government.
