Dongfang Electrical Machinery has recently announced that it entered a partnership with Atlantis Resources Limited, and that the end goal of this collaboration is to successfully implement China's first tidal power project.

As reported on several occasions, China is currently dealing with major air pollution problems. In some regions, air quality is so poor that specialists have resembled environmental conditions in these areas to those one would expect to witness during a nuclear winter.

The good news is that the country is taking steps towards reducing its use of coal. Thus, media reports say that China is looking to promote the use of shale gas by having the Fuling field reach a yearly production capacity of 10 billion cubic meters by 2017.

Besides, the country wishes to make renewables more popular than they currently are. Thus, Click Green tells us that, as part of its collaboration with China's Dongfang Electrical Machinery, Atlantis Resources Limited is to carry about onshore tidal turbine testing in the city of Hangzhou.

Following these testing operations, Atlantis Resources Limited is expected to deploy a 1MW AR 1000 turbine in the waters of China's Zhejiang Province. According to the same source, this turbine is to be installed as part of an offshore demonstration project.

Once deployed and put to work, the AR1000 will officially become China's first commercial scale tidal stream turbine. Should it perform well, the turbine will likely pave the way for the development of the country's tidal energy sector.

Interestingly enough, it appears that marine turbine manufacturer Atlantic Resources Limited and China's Dongfang Electrical Machinery, which is wholly owned by Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited, are no strangers to one another.

On the contrary, some time ago, the two companies entered a strategic agreement to support the development of the tidal power sector and are looking to promote the use of this clean energy source in the People's Republic of China.

Commenting on this latest joint initiative to deploy a turbine in the waters off the coast of the Zhejiang Province, Tim Cornelius with Atlantis Resources Limited said, “This extension to our worldwide strategic partnership with Dongfang is significant for Atlantis given the potential size of the Chinese tidal power market.”

Furthermore, “This further underlines Atlantis’s position as one of the leading players in the emerging global tidal power sector and allows Atlantis to make use of its global network to seek new sales opportunities in new markets including traditional hydro and pumped storage.”
