China filed an appeal to the International Standard Organization against the IEEE (American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for breaking the ISO rules when mending the security loopholes in the IEEE802.11i standard, developed by Intel.

This comes after ISO rejected in March the Chinese encrypting system, known as WAPI.

According to Xinhua, China accuses IEEE of conspiracy against WAPI, insulting China and other national bodies, and of intimidation and threats.

Li Jinliang, a telecommunications expert quoted by Xinhua, said he believes China's WAPI standard lost the ISO fast-track vote because the current WLAN market is dominated by Intel and voting for WAPI may hurt the interests of the monopoly group owning the existing technology.

The appeal calls for ISO to take corrective measures if the ethical and procedural violations are proven.

Moreover, BWIPS (China Broadband Wireless IP Standard Group) says that the US technology is "immature... containing many serious technical defects and numerous editorial errors."
