The number of victims escalated from 17 to 330 in less than a month

The Chili’s Grill & Bar Restaurant from the Yokosuka Naval Base, the computers of which were compromised not long ago to steal the credit card details of their customers, now faces a much more dramatic situation then first believed.

Instead of the 17 victims which were reported when the incident occurred, it turns out that 330 individuals were actually affected by the breach.

Stars and Stripes reports that $190,000 (133,000 EUR) were taken from the accounts of victims since October 4, when the investigation started.

Unfortunately, it's estimated that the number of those who fell victim is even higher than this as the masterminds behind the operation may have not used up all the information they possess yet.

“Our equipment had a problem and some credit card information was stolen from customers and staff. We want our customers and staff to feel secure so we are only taking cash. We hope we will be able to take credit cards again soon,” revealed the restaurant’s manager at the time when the breach was discovered.

Now it seems that more people are coming forward to claim their accounts were tampered with and their savings were used to make various fraudulent transactions.

“Patrons are reminded to continue to monitor their credit card activities closely and to make sure that any case of credit card fraud is brought to the attention of your bank and NCIS as soon as possible,” said base spokeswoman Michelle Stewart in a more recent statement.

The owners of the facility have terminated any credit card transactions until they install a system that will increase the security of this payment method.

Hopefully, the final number of victims will not elevate too much but those who visited the place recently are advised to keep a close eye on their bank statements to make sure no illegal transactions take place.
