Cher’s son Chaz Bono is just one of the many celebrities who will be on the next season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. Chaz is also the first transgender contestant, which seems to have generated negative reactions in some viewers.

Chaz was born Chastity, but he is now legally a man. Even so, some viewers probably believe that the family show should continue being a traditional dancing competition – in every sense of the word.

Some of them even went online to say this out loud – presumably in less than flattering terms, judging by how quickly Cher reacted on her official Twitter page.

“Lovelies! Chaz is Being Viciously Attacked on Blogs & Message boards about being on DWTS!This is Still America right ? It took guts 2 do it,” the singer and actress wrote.

“I support him no matter what he chooses 2do! God! will there always be haters! It took COURAGE 2 do dwts ! TG Chaz has an Unlimited supply,” Cher added.

She even said that it was her duty as a mother to reprimand those who hate Chaz just because he’s different from the rest.

“Mothers don’t stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who [expletive] with their children!” she lashed out.

In between tweeting about rehearsals with his DWTS partner Lacey Schwimmer, Chaz also took the time to thank Cher for her support and for putting into words what others probably wanted to say as well.

“Thanks for all your support mom. The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on DWTS as long as I possibly can,” he wrote.

He added that, while Lacey proved to be a tough trainer at times, she was definitely bringing out the best in him.

Chaz concluded his message by saying he was doing “great” and thanking his fans and followers for being so supportive of him and his latest endeavor.

The brand new season of DWTS returns on ABC on September 19.
