A description for the first ad for astronauts issued by NASA has been published on The National Archives Tumblr page.

As you can see, the post includes a memo on the position dated June 17, 1959. NASA was looking for astronauts for the Mercury mission.

The mission was the first one that entailed an American orbiting the Earth. John H. Glenn, Jr. took three spins around the planet's orbit in the “Friendship 7” space capsule. He took off on February 20, 1962.

According to the NASA document, his position entailed quite a lot of odd requirements, such as “indoctrination,” which is something

“Serves as subject-under-test, and assists in the analysis of date for the evaluation and development of various boosters and of communication,” was among some of the other information which was offered of the job.
