John Dillinger’s story, the man who virtually terrorized America with his bank robbing spree and who put police officers to shame with his ability to make himself vanish, has long fascinated the public. His story will get to see the light of day on the silver screen again, with the help of such stars as Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, who are now featured in the latest character posters for the film.

Depp, Bale and Cotillard each get a poster for their character, with the most impressive being, understandably, that of Depp as Dillinger, it has been argued. Directed by Michael Mann from a script by Mann himself and Ronan Bennett, the movie promises to be an almost exact replica of the days when Dillinger was the only name on everyone’s lips. These three posters just released surely seem to hint that the film will not disappoint, several movie-oriented publications are pointing out.

“In the action-thriller ‘Public Enemies,’ acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp) – the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone – from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.” reads the official plot synopsis.

“Public Enemies” hits theaters in the US on July 1, 2009, and is expected to score big at the box-office not only because of Depp’s involvement in it, but also on account of the other stars included in the cast and director Mann’s participation. At the same time, it is believed the story itself (handsome gangsters who seem unstoppable and are too charming not to feel sympathy for) will also turn this film into an instant hit.

However, since there still is some way to go until then, check out the official trailer below. For more details on “Public Enemies,” keep an eye on this space.
