Sony Pictures has lots of surprises for fans of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”: the promotion on the US version of the film of the same name, based on the bestseller from the “Millennium” trilogy, has officially kicked off with character posters and a brand new interview with leading star Rooney Mara.

Fans must already know that the Hollywood-made film will star Mara as Lisbeth Salander, while Daniel Craig will play investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

David Fincher is directing, with the film scheduled to come out on December 21 this year. It’s definitely one of the most anticipated releases of winter, promising to deliver stellar performances and an excellent take on the already familiar story.

To get those who haven’t yet read the book or haven’t seen the original film up to speed with everything, Sony has released the first character posters, together with the characters’ bio on the official website.

Consequently, they learn that Blomkvist “doesn’t consider himself a radical – just a financial reporter who works hard and is serious about his responsibilities as a journalist.”

From Daniel Craig’s ice-cold stare, one can easily see that determination is a quality that oozes through every pore of this man’s body.

Salander, on the other hand, is described as “different.” “She’s an imaginative and thorough investigator, […] pale and anorexic-looking and all but mute, she radiates hostility.” Indeed, she does.

Also pictured on the website are Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger, Stellan Skarsgard as Martin Vanger, and Robin Wright as Erika Berger.

Mara is featured in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly as well, the fall preview number. She says Fincher knew from the start he wanted her for the role, but he made sure she didn’t make the decision in a hurry, allowing her plenty of time to mull over it.

She also speaks of the controversial teaser poster for the film, which shows her standing in front of Daniel Craig, with her torso only covered by his arm across her chest.

She says people wouldn’t have made such a fuss over it if, instead of being shirtless, she’d been engaged in some act of violence.
