It's finally official, after months of speculation and hinting from both camps in the press, Channing Tatum is going to become the next X-Men, with an important role in the franchise and one with spinoff potential too.

The handsome actor is going to play the role of Gambit on the screen, Total Film confirms, in an interview with X-Men producer Lauren Schuler Donner. She claims that the “21 Jump Street” actor has signed on for a future project: “It is Channing.”

The reason for his selection is simple, “He's a rogue, he's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action, as we know, and he's got a real good heart, I know him personally. e'll be great for Gambit, and he's a southerner too, he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”

This echoes Channing's wishes, as in a previous interview he expressed his wish to play the suave, French-speaking mutant from New Orleans, with the power to imbue kinetic energy to any object he comes into contact with.

“I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. And I would love it. Gambit is really the only X-Man I've ever loved,” Channing said some time ago, adding “I mean I've loved them all, they're all great, but I guess from being down south - my dad's from Louisiana, I'm from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida - I don't know. I just related to him.”

What's your opinion on this new casting development? Do you think Channing will bury the role or turn it into a hit, like Hugh Jackman did with Wolverine?
