These odd chairs are the creation of designers Marjan van Aubel and James Shaw

Dr. Frankenstein would have never dreamt about introducing his monster to his friends and family, but, by the looks of it, designers Marjan van Aubel and James Shaw have no trouble letting folks see their wood shavings-based chairs, despite the fact that these pieces of furniture are not all that good looking.

Inhabitat informs that the two designers got the idea to use wood shavings to make chairs when they learned that plank manufacturers typically waste about 50-80% of the timber they receive.

Marjan van Aubel and James Shaw took it to themselves to solve this problem, and they eventually found that combining wood shavings with sawdust, chippings, and bioresin allowed them to make a polystyrene foam-like material.

It is this material that the chair pictured above is made from, and I for one have to admit that, from where I stand, it does look very much like a piece of furniture sculpted from polystyrene foam. And not sculpted in a very artistic manner, some might want to add.

Marjan van Aubel and James Shaw say that, although they look rather fragile, their wood shavings-based chairs are actually surprisingly sturdy. Besides, they are totally environmentally friendly, so I suppose I could live with the thought of having one or two around the house.
