14 DAY TRIAL // Motorola Milestone X, also known as Milestone XT720, has just received its long-awaited Gingerbread upgrade. Unfortunately, only Cellcom customers will be able to update their Milestone X units to Android 2.3.
The carrier recently announced that the update is available OTA (over the air) and can be manually initiated by going to Menu / Settings / About phone / System updates / Check now.
The Milestone X is one of the few smartphones that were initially launched with Android 2.1 Éclair on board and receive the Gingerbread upgrade.
Another regional carrier, Cincinnati Bell deployed the Android 2.2 Froyo back in July, but the operator has yet to confirm any plans to roll out the Gingerbread update as well.
Cellcom’s Gingerbread update has around 105 MB in size and brings Motorola Milestone X’s firmware to version Android 2.3. However, the carrier’s announcement comes as a surprise, as the Milestone X is not that popular among Android fans.
The smartphone is equipped with a 720 MHz processor and packs 256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of ROM, which seems to be more than enough to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.
Before installing the update, users are recommended to back up their contacts to the memory card or sync them with Google. In addition, make sure the battery is at least 40% charged and that you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi network.
The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update greatly improves the battery life while using Bluetooth or applications. The update also comes with new widgets, icons and screens with vivid colors that match the new operating system.
A new Download Manager application has been included as well, along with App Groups, which allows users to create custom app groups.
The update also brings lots of improvements and updates for various applications, including e-mail, security, camera and calendar.
