Marvel is considering increasing the odds of the film at the box office

More and more movie studios are now releasing movies in 3D because that’s the best guarantee they have that the film makes a killing at the box office even if both critics and audiences don’t like it. Marvel Studios is currently working on “Captain America” with Chris Evans and, though this is one production that’s been generating a lot of hype with comic book fans for months, it’s considering upping its odds at the box office, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Take “Clash of the Titans,” for instance. Though it failed to get people raving about it in terms of story and performances (quite on the contrary, actually), it made so much money in ticket sales that a sequel for it is already greenlit. This happened because it also came in 3D, which meant people paid more money to see it. Marvel is thinking the 3D treatment would also do wonders for “Captain America,” thus helping it lay the grounds for another comic book inspired franchise.

“If ‘Iron Man 2’ had come out late in the summer, Tony Stark might have soared right out of the screen. And don’t be surprised if Captain America’s shield or even Thor’s hammer comes flying at you in a dark theater in the seasons to come. In an interview Sunday about the huge $133.6-million opening of ‘Iron Man 2,’ Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige admitted he and his team had considered converting the superhero sequel into 3-D after seeing the success of ‘Avatar’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’,” the LA Times writes.

It wasn’t meant to be for “Iron Man,” Feige also said because post-production expenses were huge and there was simply no time left to have the film converted to 3D. However, since Marvel too is looking to capitalize on the 3D craze, the studio’s upcoming three films would almost certainly be made in 3D, especially since time is no longer a pressing issue. These are “Thor,” which is now in production, “First Avenger: Captain America” and “The Avengers.”

“‘The team has been doing a lot of research into 3-D processes, and we’re looking at it on future films when we have the time,’ he said. ‘We will be doing it at some point.’ ‘Thor’ is already in production, meaning it would have to be converted into 3-D in post, but ‘First Avenger: Captain America’ and ‘The Avengers’ could potentially be filmed with 3-D cameras. The massive success of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ has stirred a 3-D sensation in Hollywood that some compare to a gold rush and others worry might just be herd mentality. Upcoming 3-D films include Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret,’ ‘Stretch Armstrong’ and Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ reboot,” the same report further explains.
