He didn't have fighter potential

Capcom is one of the most influential game developers and publishers in Japan, owning a huge amount of extremely popular franchises, from Street Fighter to Resident Evil to Mega Man or even Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.

But the company has also made a name for itself in the fighting game genre by collaborating with the likes of SNK or, more recently, the Tatsunoko anime studios on Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. The game will see various characters from different anime series go up against various famous fighters from Capcom.

But even though the company has a huge roster of potential fighters, the producer of the game, Ryota Niitsuma, revealed that there was also a plan to include famous attorney Phoenix Wright in the title. The idea was soon dropped because he didn't have any potential for decisive and simple attacks, as was the appearance of his assistant, Franziska von Karma.

“Because Phoenix Wright only has one move, 'Objection!', we struggled. We designed a move for him: when he says objection, the actual writing attacks the opponent. However, 'objection' in Japanese is 'igiari' - it's four characters, whereas 'objection' becomes ten. When we localize, the balance of the game gets destroyed because the move becomes bigger. There'd be no way of avoiding it! We had to remove him for this reason. In the future, it is one of our aims to get him in.”

So there you have it fighting fans, if the development team jumps over the hurdle imposed by the famous lawyer, we might get to see Phoenix Wright start fighting not only with his mind but also with his body.

What do you think about the possibility of Phoenix Wright appearing in other fighting games? Will it make them a must-buy for you or is it just another peculiar idea from Capcom? Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
