In the history of gaming, there were a lot of titles that shined through their gameplay or story and took their respective genres to the next level, but Resident Evil not only brought a lot of great experiences to gamers, it also invented its genre of survival horror, as it placed various characters against endless hordes of mutated zombies and other terrifying creatures.

Now, the franchise has just seen its latest installment, Resident Evil 5 launched around the world at the beginning of March. Depicting the main character of the first game, Chris Redfield, fighting against yet another endless horde of infected creatures, the title has been welcomed by a lot of critics with open arms and confirmed the confidence that Capcom had in it.

Testimony to this confidence is the fact that the company has already shipped 4 million units of the game to retailers from around the world. Now, this doesn't mean that the game has sold that many units, but considering the massive hype it gathered around it, together with the pretty big publicity it got due to the racial debates surrounding it, the sales aren't that far behind.

Along with this very interesting piece of news, the Japanese game developer and publisher also showcased the lifetime numbers of the franchise, saying that it had sold over 40 million units with the Resident Evil brand across the globe. Also, the three Hollywood movies based on the video game series, along with the CG film Resident Evil: Degeneration, have registered big sales and profit, leading to even more brand recognition for the survival shooter.

All in all, Capcom is all smiles around this period, as both RE5 and Street Fighter IV are recording big sales, meaning that the Japanese company won't feel the recession for quite some time.
