On June 3, Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux operating system, proudly announced that it would collaborate with Cisco, the worldwide leader in IT, to implement application policy on OpenStack clouds.

Cisco has developed the Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and it will now join the Ubuntu Cloud OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL). Its application policy will be implemented as part of Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) and OpenStack Group Based Policy (GBP).

The ultimate goal of both IT companies is to deliver application policies to simplify management and improve performance of private clouds, making it easier for users to deploy and use private clouds powered by the aforementioned technologies.

The Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller and OpenStack Group Based Policy technologies are to be implemented into Ubuntu Cloud OpenStack Interoperability Lab and thoroughly tested with Ubuntu OpenStack, along with other cloud technologies from over 25 software and hardware providers.

"We are excited to join Canonical OpenStack Integration Lab. With Juju charms for GBP and Cisco ACI APIC plug-in, developers can very quickly create an OpenStack network that accurately reflects application policies for scale, performance, availability and security," says Mike Cohen, Director of Product Management for Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure.

Canonical announces that the OpenStack ecosystem is ascending

With this announcement, Canonical is also proud to announce that the OpenStack ecosystem is in a continued growth pattern, including its Ubuntu Cloud OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL), where the company conducts monthly interoperability testing on over 3,000 cloud configurations. And now, thanks to the new Cisco partnership, as well as to over 32 OpenStack Interoperability Lab partners, its Ubuntu OpenStack will become more popular.

Canonical also promises to provide Juju charms in OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL) for Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) technologies, as well as for OpenStack Group Based Policy (GBP), allowing users to deploy application policy in OpenStack without too much hassle.
