The Parallels virtualization software will be resold by Canonical through Ubuntu Partner Repository, as announced last Thursday by Canonical. This will give to the Ubuntu users the ability to find, install and run software in a very fast manner.

The Ubuntu Partner Repository and its associated services will allow software developers to make their applications readily available to the Ubuntu users. This repository contains both proprietary and open source software provided by Ubuntu Partners.

Parallels is the former SWsoft, a leading company in virtualization and automation software that optimizes computing for consumers, businesses and service providers across all major hardware, operating systems and virtualization platforms.

Parallels Workstation for Linux will give the users the ability to run at the same time, side by side, two or more different operating systems on a single computer, without the need to reboot. The deal made by Canonical with Parallels will make the desktop virtualization product more readily available to the Ubuntu users, through a drop-down menu on the operating system.

Randy Linnel, consumer services manager at Canonical, said: "We have always been committed to providing Ubuntu users with choice. Parallels is excellent virtualization technology which many users have requested. Being able to come to a commercial arrangement to make it available is great for Ubuntu users and the project itself. We look forward to users supporting it."

Bryan Goode, director of business development at Parallels, added: "Partnering with Canonical is a great way for Parallels to bring user friendly desktop virtualization to the ever-expanding global community of Ubuntu users. Parallels Software provides Ubuntu users with added flexibility to any program from almost any operating system, without having to give up their Ubuntu desktop, even for a few minutes."

Trial versions of the Parallels Workstation for Linux application can be installed through the Add/Remove feature in Ubuntu.
