Canon's decision is based on the accelerated smartphone segment sales

Earlier today we were talking about Aptina's new 25MP mobile image sensor capable of capturing 4K video footage as well as 1080p Full HD video at 120 frames per second, which will surely boost even further the already growing smartphone market.

Feeling the threat of the new generation of smartphones, Canon is considering to withdraw from the low-end compact digital camera market and stop manufacturing low-cost compacts priced under $200 / €150, according to Japanese website Nikkan.

This would actually make sense, since the low-end compact segment has already registered very low sales last year with an overall descending trend. According to the same source, this move will also allow the Nippon camera and optics manufacturer to focus more on delivering high-performance DSLR models that will give the company an upper edge over its main rivals, Nikon and Sony.

If we take into consideration the fact that Canon has already reduced the number of new compact digital camera models introduced in the past few years, it seems that the aforementioned goal is not so far away.
