While mirrorless cameras are more popular on the Asian market than in the rest of the world, DSLRs and compact cameras, although they have registered a decrease in sales over the last year, are still the categories that most optics manufacturers rely upon.

Japanese website BCNRanking has posted a full analysis of last year's compact camera and DSLR market share in Japan, which awards Canon the first place in each category. If we take a look back at previous awards, Canon is the undisputed leader of the compact and DSLR camera market in the country.

Although the company has registered a decrease in sales for the DSLR segment, it still holds almost 50% of the entire market, while Nikon falls behind with 42.5%, a substantial increase of over 7% when compared with last year's figures. Ricoh comes in third place with a little over 5%.

When it comes to the compact camera market in Japan, Canon still holds the first place for the ninth year in a row and has registered an increase in sales of 2.4% over last year's figures.

On the other hand, Nikon has seen an overall sales increase in the compact camera segment over the last three years, which puts it on the second place with 15.5% market share, only 0.1% higher than third place holder Sony.

While Canon enjoys the highest market share on both compact camera and DSLR segments, the same can't be said about the mirrorless segment. This might as well have been a deciding factor when the company chose to launch its latest mirrorless camera, the EOS M2, only in China and Japan.

Recent mirrorless market share analysis results place Olympus as the number one interchangeable lens camera selling brand in Japan for the third year in a row. Sony comes in second with a 6% increase over the last year, while Panasonic holds the third place after losing 9% market share.
