It can shoot images and video even at night, very good for astronomers

Anyone who's ever tried to take a photo at night will know that cameras don't really do much unless the blitz is on.

Canon has created a sensor that will finally change this.

Cameras capable of shooting the night sky have existed for a while, but they are large things, for specialists.

The new image full-frame CMOS sensor from Canon can record video and snap pictures in very low light conditions.

While security systems and professional devices will benefit from it, consumer cameras will probably get the most attention as soon as they start integrating it.

So far, a prototype camera has been used to record video in a room illuminated only by the light from burning incense sticks, and the Geminid meteor shower. More coverage here.

The newly developed 35 mm full-frame CMOS will be on display at Security Show 2013 in Tokyo, Japan, from March 05 to March 08.
