A worthy successor to the PowerShot G9

The old saying "When it rains, it pours" seems to be one of Canon's favorite mottos, since the company doesn't really feel "content" until it floods the market with a large number of products, all in one day. And that's exactly what happened today, when Canon rolled out quite a few interesting cameras (most likely in preparation for Photokina), including here the PowerShot G10 model, a bridge camera with advanced features and processing power.

Presented by the company as the successor of the PowerShot G9, the G10 features a 28 mm wide-angle lens with 5x optical zoom, 14.7 megapixel sensor and 3.0-inch Pure Color LCD II screen, which can be used for viewing the photos and menus in the best possible conditions.

Just like all of the other digital cameras launched by Canon today, the G10 makes very good use of the company's DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor, which brings about such important features as Servo AF, high ISO speed noise reduction processing, a new Intelligent Contrast Correction function that automatically enhances image quality in high-contrast shooting situations, as well as a serious improvement in Face Detection technology. Moreover, the G10 also features a Face Detection Self-Timer, which automatically takes a photo two seconds after a new face enters the scene.

Another interesting feature of the G10 is related to the available control options, since the controller wheel is equipped with a dedicated Exposure Compensation Dial, which allows quick and intuitive adjustment of exposure compensation, as well as a "My Menu" function, which can be used for registering five user-selected options from the shooting menu, as well as 26 shooting modes.

The PowerShot G10 digital camera is very likely to arrive in stores at some point in October (at least in the US, probably the rest of the world as well) and will have an estimated retail price of around 500 US dollars. For this sum, users will also get, besides the camera itself, a battery, charger, neck strap, USB and A/V interface cables, Canon Digital Solutions Software CD, and a 1-year Canon U.S.A., Inc. limited warranty.
