14 DAY TRIAL // Word on the street has it that Canon is looking to cease manufacturing of the EOS 7D by the end of 2014. With the camera out of the picture, the company will be able to focus on bringing life to its successor, the Canon 7D Mark II (might not be the official name).
Rumors about the availability of the camera have varied. Some claimed the 7D Mark II will be showed to Pro-grade retailers this month, with wide consumer availability being scheduled for August.
But it appears this information is receiving a makeover, as trusted sources familiar with the matter talking to CanonRumors are now claiming Canon will have the 7D substitute ready in September, right before Photokina 2014 kickstarts in all its glory.
Apparently, the non-disclosure agreements related to the Canon 7D Mark II will end in September, so the company will finally unveil the device.
Sources claim the EOS 7D II will probably see the light of day on September 9 or September 12, while Photokina 2014 opens its doors on September 16.
As we wait on that, it might be good to know you can still purchase the Canon 7D from online retailers like Amazon for $1,300 / €952 a pop.
Of course, the Canon 7D Mark II won’t be coming alone, and at the same event we’re most likely going to see a new EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, too.
The optics has been in the rumor mill a lot of times and was supposed to be unveiled years ago, but for some reason it failed to materialize in the physical world.
Amazon is currently selling the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom lens for $1,500 / €1,098 after a $200 / €146 rebate.
One of the most interesting bits of info about the upcoming EOS 7D Mark II that has been leaked to us indicates that the camera will arrive with a new sensor technology.
Sources familiar with the matter didn’t give us many clues and settled to say this would be “more than an evolutionary technology,” something completely new. Apparently, it’s not going to be the Foveon-like tech that was spotted in some patents a while back.
The camera should also arrive with a 3.2-inch LED screen, an improved version of the Dual Pixel AF sensor, dual DIGIC, 10fps, dual memory card slots, 61 AF points, GPS and Wi-Fi.
A while back, we also told you a few lucky photographers were being handed the 7D Mark II at the World Cup for testing, hinting at its upcoming unveiling.
