Canada has formally approved Apple's iBookstore, according to statements provided by government officials on Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Also of importance for Canadian iOS customers, Canada's wireless operator, Rogers (the official iPhone carrier in the territory), has begun unlocking Apple handsets for customers that have reached the end of their contract, or purchased the device unsubsidized.

According to Macnn, a statement from Minister James Moore a Macnn reveals that the Ministry of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages is granting formal approval of Apple's iBookstore.

"Our Government is committed to strengthening Canada's economy through all its sectors, especially arts and culture," said Minister James Moore.

"Apple has demonstrated how iBookstore Canada represents new opportunities for Canadian authors and publishers, and I have determined that this investment will be of net benefit to Canada."

The press release informs that Apple has committed to:

· Promotion of Canadian-authored books--both French- and English-language titles--in iBookstore in Canada and other iBookstores internationally;

· Increased opportunities for Canadian publishers and authors, including new and independent writers;

· Increased access to titles from Aboriginal authors and publishers;

· Assistance to Canadian publishers in streamlining processes of e-book creation and enhancement; and

· Jobs for Canadians and improved services for Canadian consumers, including an iBookstore tailored to Canadian readers.

Also noteworthy for Canadian customers, carrier Rogers has reportedly begun unlocking iPhones for customers who have either finished their contracts, or bought the iPhone unsubsidized.

According to a report by iPhone in Canada, the new policy Rogers sub-brand Fido has allows qualifying customers to unlock their iPhones for a $50 fee plus applicable taxes.

The source claims that this policy applies to phones, embedded laptops, and rocket sticks depending on manufacturer restrictions, and requires the following conditions to be met:

- Have an account in good standing - Have paid the un-subsidized / no term cost for the device at least 30 days prior OR have finished their Commitment Period (contract) - Unlock a device which is listed in their equipment history (no grey market devices) - Pay a $50 unlocking fee plus applicable taxes (note: prepaid customers must have a $50 plus the applicable taxes, balance on their account).
