Talk about a great way of starting the New Year: Cameron Diaz and bad-boy Benji Madden dated for about a year, but by December when they got engaged, they already knew they were meant to be spending the rest of their life together. On Monday, they became Mr. and Mrs., a publicist confirms to People magazine.

Talk about the impending nuptials started making the rounds in mid-December when various media outlets noticed a suspicious-looking ring on Cameron’s engagement finger – “suspicious” as in the kind that usually accompanies a marriage proposal.

Then, a few hours ago, rumor had it that there was some commotion at their LA home, which indicated that a wedding party would be thrown there. That turned out to be the case.

“Our new journey together”

Cameron and Benji didn’t even confirm the engagement, which is a clear sign that they wanted to pull off the wedding without the media finding out about it and possibly ruining it. They were almost successful.

“We couldn't be happier to begin our new journey together surrounded by our closest family and friends,” reads their joint statement to People magazine.

An insider adds that Diaz, though once so determined that married life was not for her (and that human beings were not made to be monogamous), was convinced otherwise when she met Benji and realized that he was “the one” for her. She’s found “true happiness,” the tipster adds.

Benji feels the same way, and though they may come across as an unlikely couple, they have a lot of things in common and nothing but love and respect for each other.

A star-studded reception

The same media outlet reports that Diaz’s bachelorette party took place over the weekend in Los Angeles and was more of a girls-night-out-type of thing than a party like you see in the movies.

The wedding reception was held at her and Benji’s LA mansion and included many celebrity friends, including good pal Drew Barrymore, who was also one of the bridesmaids. Sister-in-law Nicole Richie was also there, as was Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Robin Antin and Samantha Ronson, to name just some of the biggest celebrities in attendance.

“It was a big wedding, but they still managed to make it feel very personal. Only their families and very special friends attended,” another source reveals for People. “It all felt very down-to-earth and sweet. Guests arrived smiling and almost seemed giddy. Everyone was excited to be a part of the wedding.”

No photos of the bride and groom on their big day have been released or leaked online just yet.
