The next Call of Duty game from series creator Infinity Ward is set to be a prequel, as new rumors say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will tell the story of Ghost.

While the source of the rumor may not be all that trustworthy, this new report does make some sense.

According to ThisIsXbox, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will follow the story of Ghost, a fan favorite, first seen in 2009's Modern Warfare 2.

The non-playable character impressed gamers with his tough image and his memorable Skull-printed balaclava.

The report says that Modern Warfare 3 will be a prequel, sort of like an origins story for Ghost, and reveal how he became a member of Task Force 141.

The story will follow the events told in the Modern Warfare comic book written by David Lapham, and see Ghost revisit locations from the original Modern Warfare and its sequel.

Modern Warfare 3, however, won't appear this year, at least according to the same sources, as the Infinity Ward team wants to take its time and prove that even after the major team shakeups from last year, it can still produce high quality games.

Even so, the title won't use a new game engine, so don't expect prettier graphics or things like that.

Do remember that this is just a rumor, as of yet, so don't get your hopes too high that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will deliver on the things mentioned above.

Still, it would make a lot of sense, seeing as how Ghost became extremely popular after the launch of Modern Warfare 2 and will certainly attract lots of players.

There was even a rumor floating around the web, with Ghost's voice actor saying that Infinity Ward was thinking of a spinoff title featuring the tough character.

This doesn't mean you won't get a Call of Duty game this year, as Activision might allow its recently-founded Sledgehammer Games studio a chance to reveal its own take on the first person series.
