The upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is setting up to be a pretty exciting entry in the long-running military first-person shooter franchise, and for good reason.

The futuristic setting that the game's announcement trailer revealed is the same one that made Deus Ex: Human Revolution so great, exploring current-day problems in an exaggerated environment, in order to make us think about the impact of modern technology on our lives and future.

Last year, we got Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall and Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, two games exploring a science-fiction theme, but only doing so at the mechanical level, failing to capitalize on what makes speculative fiction so great. Hopefully, Treyarch will do a better job of offering a compelling story to go with the fancy new gameplay opportunities.

More and more details regarding the game are gradually making their way to the Internet, including the return of some of the best features of the previous installments in the Black Ops series.

The ability to hack things has always been an important part of the gameplay, and Black Hatting has been one of the prominent mechanics of Black Ops 2.

Black Ops 3's futuristic setting has a lot of potential

A fan asked Treyarch's David Vonderhaar whether or not hacking would be included in the upcoming Black Ops 3, and the dev responded that the company had some "big plans" for hacking mechanics, but for the time being they were "still working it out," not confirming or denying the return of the Black Hat tactical equipment.

In Black Ops 2, players could employ the device to hack enemy equipment and scorestreaks, destroying them or converting them for their own use, making for some exciting gameplay interactions.

Black Ops 2 was the first entry in the Call of Duty series to feature futuristic technology, and given Black Ops 3's even bigger focus on technologically advanced gadgetry, we're bound to see Treyarch take things to the next level.

If you missed the game's reveal, you can see its announcement trailer below, showing a gritty future, where the lines between humanity and military robotics get increasingly blurred, completely redefining warfare.
