Microsoft confirmed customer reports of issues associated with the calibration of multiple touch screens connected to the same Windows 7 computer.

Essentially, the Redmond company is noting that some users might have problems properly leveraging Tablet PC Settings Control Panel with their secondary touch-capable monitor.

Windows 7 customers can be affected, even though they deployed the latest service pack, as can be those running the server equivalent.

“Assume that you have a Windows 7-based computer that is connected to two touch screens. You try to calibrate the second touch screen by using the Tablet PC Settings Control Panel item,” the software giant said.

“However, when you touch the calibration grids on the calibration screen that is displayed on the second touch screen, the gesture is not recognized. Therefore, calibration data for the second touch screen is not saved. You must press Esc to recover from this issue.”

Microsoft has not provided any information on the source of this problem, but it did publish a Knowledge Base article designed to detail the glitch as well as offer a solution.

KB 2618640 also comes to offer users a hotfix, which will enable them to calibrate a second touch monitor connected to a Windows 7 machine.

According to the software giant, the fix is available not only for Windows 7 RTM, but also for Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

The Redmond company stresses that the hotfix is designed to resolve only the particular problem described above, and that users should not deploy it unless they experienced the glitch.

Microsoft’s current plans indicate that KB 2618640 will be included into Service Pack 2 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, becoming available to all customers.

The software giant did not say whether early adopters testing Windows 8 Developer Preview have experienced any issues when calibrating multiple touch screens.

Windows 7 SP1 RTM and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RTM are available for download here.
