Zoo staff are not sure who the pups' mother is, hope to soon solve this mystery

About a week and a half ago, the Calgary Zoo welcomed five meerkat pups. The baby meerkats were born in a temporary shelter inside the zoo's animal health center, where the entire group had to be moved after local floods had engulfed their enclosure.

Oddly enough, zoo staff are not sure who the pups' mother is. They say that one of the females, Penelope, is the one looking after them most of the time, so it is likely that the pups belong to her.

However, Petunia appears to have also taken a keen interest in looking after this litter.

Because of this, zoo employees suspect that this other female is the mother of at least some of the pups, Zoo Borns reports.

“It was important that we not disturb the Meerkats and the litter, in particular after everything they have been through.

“So it took a few days before we got an accurate count on the number of pups. From everything we are seeing we are optimistic that they are doing well so far,” general curator Jamie Dorgan tells the press.
