11,000 users have already signed up and formed over 900 teams

Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions are an important part of most international cyber security conferences. Now, a team of experts is determined to take cyber security CTFs to the next level.

In CTF365, each competitor must be part of a team that has between 5 and 10 members. Each of these teams has its own webapps and webservers that they have to protect against the others.

To make things more interesting, teams can form alliances, in which case they share the points earned for taking down an enemy “fortress.”

Recently, we’ve had an interview with Marius Corîci, one of the 6 people involved in this project.

Corîci says CTF365 is different from other competitions for several reasons. He believes that the main problem with most CTFs is the way they’re designed and the way they’re held.

For instance, CTFs usually last for a couple of days tops. They don’t always allow competitors to take part remotely, they don’t replicate real life scenarios, they have too many restrictions, and many of them don’t count as experience for people who want to get a job in the IT security industry.

CTF365, on the other hand, lasts all year round, it doesn’t require competitors to be present physically, and everything is done on a global scale. Around 11,000 users have already formed over 900 teams.

“We, the team behind CTF365, decided that it's time to change the way CTF is designed and held by bringing a brand new approach and push security gamification at a bigger scale: World Wide,” Corîci noted.

“Our goal is to create a real life Internet replica where security professionals, security students and security wannabes get continuous training on real man-made servers and infrastructures, not in some special vulnerable-designed servers.”

Currently, CTF365 is still in its Alpha stage. However, the initiators of the project hope to launch the final version by February 2014.

The complete interview with Marius Corîci will be published in the upcoming hours.
