Secure cloud hosting firm FireHost reveals that in the first quarter of 2013, the volume of Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks increased by 132% compared to the same period of 2012. SQL Injection attacks have also increased in frequency compared to the first quarter of 2012, by 87%.

According to the company’s quarterly “superfecta” report – which analyzes CSRF, cross-site scripting, SQL Injection, and Directory Traversal attacks – a total of 29,713,520 attacks have been blocked between January and March.

Chris Hinkley, senior security engineer at FireHost, says it shouldn’t surprise anyone that CSRF attacks have increased in volume, considering that cybercriminals can automate such attacks more easily.

SQL Injection attacks are not so easy to launch. On the other hand, they’re very effective when successful.

FireHost’s IP Reputation Management statistics show that in Q1 2013, over 15.5 million attacks were filtered, over 1 million unique attackers were identified. The average attack frequency was recorded at 171,002 per day.
