At FPD International 2008

Without a doubt, OLED technology represents the future of displays, whether we're talking about TVs or smaller devices, like netbooks or mobile phones. For this reason, everyone's trying to get on this bandwagon, be it well-established companies (such as Samsung SDI) or more low-profile (yet equally innovative) firms. That's exactly the case with the Taiwan-based Chi Mei EL company, which displayed at this year's FPD International 2008 show a 25-inch OLED display that's thinner than half a millimeter (0.5 mm).

While this is not the first ultra-thin OLED we've heard of lately (remember that "flapping" panel from Samsung we talked about yesterday?), what's really interesting to point out here is the sheer size of this screen, of 25 inches. Furthermore, the display has a resolution of 1,366 pixels by 768 pixels (WXGA) and can display 16.7 million colors.

Chi Mei EL had previously showcased a 3-mm thick OLED panel, but it managed to slim it down even further by implementing a completely new production method, declared one of the company's representatives for OLED-Display.net. Unfortunately, no additional details regarding the specifics of this production method have been provided.

Now, for a little background information about CMEL. The company represents a subsidiary of  Taiwan's Chi Mei Optoelectronics and was established back in 2004 to develop OLED displays. Furthermore, the company already sells a number of small-size panels for use in portable electronics devices, but, at least for the time being, it's a lot less-known on the market than most of its other competitors.

This announcement, as well as all of the other similar ones made at FPD International 2008, prove that research and development in the area of OLED displays is being carried out at very high speeds, since any major achievement in this field could really place the company that has attained it way ahead of the competition.
