Toshiba launches first-ever TransferJet adapter for iOS

A close-proximity wireless transfer technology originally invented by Sony and promoted by a Consortium of multiple tech vendors, TransferJet is finally available in the form of an attractive dongle for iPhones and iPads.

Announced today by Toshiba, one of the leading TransferJet Consortium members, the TJM35420LT is reportedly the industry’s first TransferJet adapter for iOS providing owners of iDevices with “simple connections and ultra-high speed data transfers with low power consumption, and works simply by bringing the two devices in the transfer into close proximity.”

100MB in 3 seconds

The Japanese company claims users will be able to send 100MB of data between devices in just three seconds, which is certainly a claim that many will want to put to the test at CES 2015, where the dongle will be showcased for the first time.

The thing works only if the sender and the receiver bring their devices within a 3CM distance of one another, which may sound a little disappointing, but Toshiba says it’s for security reasons. Imagine hitting “send” to a private movie by accident and someone accepts it before you realize what you’ve done.

Pricing and availability

The product will sell for around $40 (€33.52), and it will make its retail debut in Japan, followed by Europe, and USA. A similar adapter will be showcased for Windows computers and Android handsets, Toshiba said.

If you happen to be at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 6, be sure to stop by the Toshiba booth to see the TransferJet adapters in action.
