The new operating system is different from what Palm's old phones had

HP may have failed to actually make much of anything with the webOS it got upon buying ill-fated smartphone maker Palm, but LG seems to have succeeded where HP failed.

Well, maybe that's not true. Ultimately, whether or not LG succeeded will fall to customers to decide. Despite the new incarnation of the operating system in webOS TVs, sales might not live up to expectations anyway.

Still, webOS is one of those rare things that everyone seems to want to see succeeding, and the three new features might just make it happen: simple connection, simple switching and simple discovery.

Simple connection means that users can easily set up the TV. Upon first turning it on, Bean Bird appears, an animated character that guides you through various options.

Simple discovery probably refers to easy familiarization with all the features, and maybe the built-in web browser.

As for simple switching, it refers to the large shortcut bar on the lower side of the screen, which lets you directly access Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, CinemaNow, Twitter, Netflix, and MLB.tv.
