The smartphone will arrive on shelves on January 19th at $199.99

Today at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Last Vegas, Verizon Wireless and LG Electronics went official with a new LTE-capable handset for the wireless services provider, namely the LG Spectrum.

The new mobile phone will land on shelves with a 4.5-inch True HD In-Plane Switching (IPS) display, the first handset at Verizon to pack such a screen.

Moreover, it will arrive with HD access to the ESPN ScoreCenter application, with will deliver ScoreCenter stats, images and videos in 720p HD. Users will be able to access in-game stats, news and video.

The handset's screen can deliver a 1280 x 720 pixels resolution, and is one of the brightest and sharpest displays. LG Spectrum can deliver 500-nit display luminance.

The new mobile phone is powered by a Qualcomm dual-core application processor that has been clocked in at 1.5GHz, and which can deliver support for Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network to deliver great data speeds while on the go.

On the back, the new device sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper that also features LED flash and which can record videos in full HD resolution (1080p). It is paired with a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front, for video chatting.

The specifications list of the new device also includes Mobile Hotspot capability, so that users can share Verizon's 4G network with up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices. LG also packed it with Dolby Digital Plus technology.

The smartphone includes a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space, with a 16GB microSD card pre-installed. It also features Bluetooth 3.0 , HDMI mirroring via MHL, and SmartShare to share media wirelessly to DLNA-enabled devices.

When launched, the new mobile phone will run under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, though LG promises an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade sometime in the first half of the ongoing year.

The handset also arrives with support for Google Mobile Services such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Google Search, and Google Maps, as well as with access to the Android Market, where thousands of applications and games can be found available for download. The Netflix app was preloaded on it.

The new LG Spectrum is set to become available for purchase through Verizon's Stores starting with January 19th, featuring a price tag of $199.99 with the signing of a two-year contract agreement.
