AMD and CyberLink will be demonstrating Blu-ray stereoscopic 3D standard at the 2010 CES

The Blu-ray stereoscopic 3D will be previewed during the 2010 Computer Electronics Show as part of a joint effort by AMD and CyberLink. This new standard will become the latest addition to the 3D graphics technologies supported by Advanced Micro Devices, such as 3D DLP televisions and dual-panel and line interleaved 3D monitors. This demonstration will be part of AMD's plan to accelerate the worldwide consumer adoption of 3D entertainment solutions through OEMs, software developers and content distributors.

Stereoscopic 3D will likely become widely available sometime in the second half of 2010. AMD, in tune with its membership of the Blu-ray Disk Association, has been working closely with its technology partners in order to both finalize the format specification and ensure full compatibility with its own hardware portfolio. When both these objectives are achieved, all end-users will have the opportunity to enjoy high-definition 3D graphics, identical to those that, until not long ago, could only be found in theaters.

“AMD has a long, proud tradition of delivering leading technologies to market – technologies that have a meaningful and positive impact on the PC experience,” Rick Bergman, senior vice president, AMD Products Group, said. “Stereoscopic 3D is set to be one of these technologies, and that’s why AMD has committed the time and resources to ensure that when Blu-ray stereoscopic 3D is ready for the world, AMD will be ready to bring it to consumers, just as we have done recently with DirectX 11-capable hardware to support DirectX 11 gaming.”

Indeed, AMD has already become the first graphics supplier to provide DirectX 11 support, through its recently released Radeon HD 5970, a graphics card that also has multi-display capabilities thanks to the ATI Eyefinity technology. Blu-ray stereoscopic 3D will strengthen AMD's position on the graphics and video markets and the demonstration is expected to stir high levels of anticipation in end-users.

“AMD has been a valuable partner, developing hardware optimized for the highest quality video and audio experience with PowerDVD Ultra,” Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink, added. “With the addition of stereoscopic 3D support for the next generation of Blu-ray discs, we’re ready to bring consumers an incredible new entertainment experience in the coming year. Our joint technology preview at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show will give everyone a taste of what’s in store.”

The actual demonstration will be done in the Grand Lobby (GL-8 and GL-10) of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
