A very good storage solution for the company's hybrid camcorders

Sony has started this year's CES with several A/V-related announcements, including here quite a large number of handheld camcorders that can record directly in HD format. And in order to complement this line-up, the Japanese company has also introduced a Memory Stick PRO Duo memory card which sports a whopping 16 GB capacity, large enough to store a very decent amount of high-definition video.

Although the new MS PRO Duo card is not necessarily designed to be used solely in camcorders, the company does inform us that this large-capacity flash storage media is ideal for Sony's new Handycam models that record on HDD or DVDs and media cards and rely on AVCHD compression technology. Furthermore, the new Memory Stick card stores up to 110 minutes of high-definition video recorded in full HD mode and almost six hours when shooting in 1440 LP mode, which is quite enough for most amateur "videographers" and their home movies.

About the size of a postage stamp, the card is a very good solution as a recording media for HD content because of its ability to quickly and easily transfer large amounts of video content between devices. Furthermore, the storage device can be easily removed from a camcorder and placed into the Memory Stick media slot in compatible computers or card readers for editing and sharing content.

As the news release from Sony reads, the 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media card will be available in March for around 300 US dollars, which makes it a rather costly addition to the already expensive Handycam camcorders. However, we mustn't forget that we're dealing with up to 110 minutes of HD video, which is nothing to look down on.
