The DCX family

Since Motorola is one of the world's largest manufacturers of various CE devices, it's sometimes a little difficult to keep track of all the "pies" the company's got a finger in. However, it seems that amid all those RZR's, ol' Moto is also manufacturing set-top boxes, and this is exactly the specific area the company's latest announcement refers to.

Thus, in order to be prepared to handle the increasing amount of HD content delivered by the cable industry, the company has just revealed the DCX series, a new generation of MPEG-4 advanced video compression set-tops.

According to the company's statement, the DCX high-definition set-tops come with such features as HD video and surround sound audio capabilities, the possibility of time shifting TV shows and storing customer-created multimedia content. This stored content can then be shared with other compatible devices in the home, using the DCX as a multimedia hub.

The DCX series fully supports high-bandwidth applications with HD decode capabilities and provides MPEG-4 advanced video compression (AVC) support. Additionally, they combine MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 technologies, support DOCSIS downstream channel bonding and fast IP connection to handle future services and work with a full range of interactive applications including SDV and VOD.

Furthermore, these next-gen DVRs also provide support for MoCA, HTML, DOCSIS, MCard, OCAP, Dolby Digital Plus, as well as the latest audio technologies including Dolby Digital Plus (multitrack audio).

The DCX series of set-top boxes from Motorola, which includes for now the dual-tuner DCX3400, single-tuner DCX3200 and single SD tuner DCX100 models, is scheduled for deployment in the third quarter of 2008, which means that we'll have to wait quite a lot for the first pricing details (as well as detailed features and specs).
