VPL-VW70 and VPL-HW10

It's been quite a busy time for Japanese company Sony lately. Even if it came up with a large number of products at the IFA 2008 show from Berlin, it still had to keep something in the bag for yet another major event, CEDIA, which is taking place as we speak over the pond, in Denver, Colorado. And that "something" is none other than the new VPL-VW70 1080p SXRD projector, which targets those users who want to get the most out of their home theater system and are willing to pay good money for a high level of quality.

The VPL-VW70 has been packed with the most advanced technologies currently available on the market. Thus, the new 1920 x 1080 progressive Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD) projector features 24p True Cinema technology, as well as a 60,000:1 dynamic contrast and a brightness level of 800 ANSI lumens. Furthermore, the projector incorporates the BRAVIA Engine 2 all-digital video signal processing engine, which employs unique algorithms for noise reduction and color enhancement.

The device delivers an extended level of versatility, since it can accept an external anamorphic lens that, when used together with Sony's Anamorphic Zoom Mode, allows users to take full advantage of panel resolution and screen size while watching a movie with native aspect ratio of 2.35:1. When the aforementioned functioning mode is employed, the VPL-VW70 will output a trigger signal that can be used to activate the optional lens and screen transition.

The adjustment range for the VPL-VW70 is +/-2 pixel in 1/10 pixel steps, but the device takes it even further, since it features panel zone alignment, allowing users to further calibrate the picture. The model also sports an automatic lens cover that helps protect the lens from dust.

The VPL-VW70 projector will be available in November across the US for about $8,000. Besides the VPL-VW70, Sony also brought at CEDIA an "older" acquaintance of ours, the VPL-HW10, which has been announced at IFA. However, we'll mention the fact that it will retail in the US for around 3,500 US dollars, which might make it quite attractive for the general public.
