Just the other day, CBS made a shocking announcement: “Ghost Whisperer,” starring Jennifer Love Hewitt as a woman who can see dead people and help them solve their business with the living so that they can “move on,” has been canceled. Speaking with E! News, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler, says no one expects shows to stay on the air for eternity.

Though ratings for the show had been going down, the move on behalf of CBS was shocking nonetheless, mainly because fans expected the show to drag on for at least another season or two. After all, it has happened before, so why should this have been an exception. Sadly, it turned out that “Ghost Whisperer” was precisely the exception that makes the rule, as CBS pulled the plug on it, deciding to focus on other projects than throw money at one that was barely making ends meet, so to speak.

However, it was not an easy decision, E! says after speaking with Mrs. Tassler. “There’s one thing CBS honcho Nina Tassler wants you to know about their surprising new lineup: There’s no love lost. No, literally – she’s referring to Ghost Whisperer (RIP) star Jennifer Love Hewitt. […] Why Ghost Whisperer and why now?! Nina puts it simply: ‘It’s sad, but shows don’t stay on the air forever.’ A little harsh, but true – not to say that made the choice any easier on the execs,” the aforementioned e-zine writes.

“‘It was surprising to us, too,’ she explained. ‘If we didn’t have the strength coming out of the development season, we might not have had the opportunity to do it. Ultimately, it’s all about ratings for the network – that’s where we have to continue to improve and succeed. It was personally very tough; Love is a friend, the producers are friends,” Mrs. Tassler says. As for rumors that ABC might pick up the show, the CBS boss says, “that just comes with the territory.”

Other shows that fell victims this new season and will not be picked up again are Julia-Louis Dreyfus’ “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “Gary Unmarried,” “Cold Case,” “Miami Medical,” “Accidentally on Purpose” and “Numb3rs.” “Ghost Whisperer” and “Old Christine” might move over to ABC, buzz in the industry has it.
