A new free resource available for download from Microsoft is designed to help customers streamline various tasks related to their Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance units.

The Business Intelligence Appliance Monitoring Management Pack is now live on the Microsoft Download Center, up for grabs for those already running version 1.0 of Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance.

The Pack offers discovery, monitoring, and management capabilities, the software giant revealed.

“The following features are new in this release of the Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance Management Pack:

• Discover and monitor Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance units.

• Provide two state views: with Appliance Units and with contained servers.

• Provide alert view which focus user on SQL Appliance monitoring problems,” Microsoft revealed.

Along with the MS BI Appliance Monitoring MP en-us.msi download, the Redmond company is also offering customers OM2007_MP_SQLApplianceBI.doc, namely guidance on how customers can make the best of the Pack.

The resource contains an introduction to the Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance Management Pack, but also details on how to get started, on security considerations, on overall operations and even troubleshooting advice.

According to the company, the following files are contained by the Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance Management Pack: Microsoft.SQLServerAppliance.Library.mp; Microsoft.SQLServerAppliance.BI.Discovery.mp; Microsoft.SQLServerAppliance.BI.Monitoring.mp and the EULA.doc.

“The Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance Management Pack automatically discovers the following object types:

• Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance Unit

• Microsoft Business Intelligence Appliance Server

• SQL Server Generic Appliance Seed Object,” the software giant added.

In order to take advantage of the Business Intelligence Appliance Monitoring Management Pack, customers need to already have installed System Center Essentials 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Operations Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Operations Manager 2007 R2.

Ahead of actually importing the Pack, Microsoft advices that a number of prerequisite management packs be deployed: Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Management v. 14.0.4744.1000, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Management Pack v. 14.0.4744.1000, SQL Server 2008 Management Pack v. 6.1.314.36 and Microsoft Windows Server OS Base Management Pack v. 6.0.6794.0.
