Gamers will have their entire game history linked to their ship

Actual space flight might not be a part of the upcoming shooter Destiny from Bungie, but the team still says that players will become very attached to their ships and to the way they will be able to reflect their adventures.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Eric Osborne, the leading writer on the science fiction project, says that, “Your player space ship is another extension of your character. It's something you'll upgrade and customise. It'll help tell your story of where you've been and what you've accomplished.”

Despite this wealth of spaceship-focused elements, gamers will only be able to play when their character is on a planet, exploring new areas and fighting enemies.

The entire universe of Destiny is imbued with the spirit of the frontier and the animations linked to space flight are designed to show gamers how far from home they are going in order to make sure that humanity remains safe in the long term.

The writer adds, “We wouldn't recreate the whole of Venus because, well, one, it would take you forever to go around and you would die on the surface, right? And you would never experience a sunset. So there are few things we're going to take liberties with to make sure the core action experience is fun.”

Destiny is designed as a social first-person shooter, a game where players will be able to solo their way through the story, but will have more fun as long as they are willing to group with others to achieve tougher objectives.

The game is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2014 on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and current-gen consoles.

A beta period will take place earlier in the year and Bungie expects 1 million players to take part and test the core mechanics.
