Nintendo has revealed that the built-in software of its new 3DS platform is the device's killer app, largely because no current game can convey the new features of the device better than its regular applications.

Nintendo now has its 3DS handheld on sale all over the world, so it has began hyping up its features, games and applications.

[admark=1]Like any new piece of hardware, however, the 3DS needs its so-called "killer app," something that really drives the point home that it's a platform you need to purchase.

According to Nintendo UK marketing manager James Honeywell, the 3DS' killer app is its built-in software, which highlights all of its features in simple ways to all gamers.

"I actually think that the killer app is the software that is built into the console," he said to CVG. "With the AR games, the Mii maker, the quests and the ability to swap Miis, those are the killer apps and people should take the time to have a go on those. I'm sure they'll be surprised at the level of depth and ingenuity that is already there."

We already posted our Nintendo 3DS Software review, and the feeling we got is that you don't really need a game from its current lineup to thoroughly enjoy the new device and experience its wide range of features.

Still, Honeywell feels that plenty of gamers will be interested in some of the first party titles that will be released later this year, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which is scheduled to appear in late June.

"I know from personal experience of being on the sampling tours that the game everyone ran to was Zelda, to get their first experience of it in 3D, so we know it's hotly anticipated, and hopefully we'll be making an announcement fairly soon so people will be able to find out when they'll be able to go and get it."

Other games will be released for the 3DS until then, including ones from Nintendo and from other companies like Ubisoft, Electronic Arts or Capcom, so you won't get bored with the platform's built-in apps.
