Optical drives aren't used much nowadays, especially portable ones, because flash drives and portable HDDs/SSDs have been stealing their buyers. Still, some companies still release mobile ODDs periodically, like Buffalo.

The new drive is called DVSM-PTS58U3 and is an external DVD writer that weighs 220 grams / 0.48 pounds and measures 138 x 152 x 14.44 mm / 5.43 x 5.98 x 0.56 inches.

A USB 3.0 cable allows it to connect to PCs and notebooks, so as to write data at 8x for DVD-R/+R/+RW, 6x for DVD-R(DL)/+R(DL)/-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/-RW.

There is a second USB cable though, a USB 2.0 cable only meant to provide some extra energy when required. A notification light will turn red when the Boost cable is needed.

Have 7,245 yen / $73 / €54 ready if you intend to buy this thing. You'll have to be living in Japan though, or have someone there to pick up the order for you. Color options include black, silver and white.
