Buffalo has been very active on the storage front lately, having unveiled a large variety of storage solutions, including new flash-based solid state drives and USB flash drives, as well as a number of portable hard disk drives some time ago. Not wanting to let the month go by without unveiling a newer platter-spinning gadget, the company has now unwrapped what seems to be a very enduring device which, while designed for portability, has a set of internal and external design elements meant to both protect it and make it easier to handle.

Buffalo's latest product is a portable hard disk drive from the HD-PXU2 series, codenamed HD-PX1.0TU2-BK. It is a high-capacity model, with a total storage space of 1TB. This capacity is enclosed within a 90 (W) 20 (H) x 134 (D) mm frame not only meant to make it easy to carry around, but also built with a silicone band, for increased adherence that prevents it from slipping. This is useful, considering that the total weight of the product is of 240 grams. Of course, these reliability-enhancing features would not have meaning without matching specs.

The HD-PX1.0TU2-BK operates on the USB 2.0 interface and, thus, has a maximum transfer rate of 480Mbps. It boasts a USB 2.0 wrap-around cable, for added convenience, as well as an internal shock-resistance mechanism, which allows it to survive impacts (when dropped, for example). As for data security, the Buffalo portable HDD has automatic hardware encryption.

The Crystal Black-coated Buffalo HD-PXU2, with its high capacity of 1TB, will most likely be intended for backup purposes or for transporting multi-gigabyte files. Consumers that are interested in this shock-proof model should be able to get it soon, considering that it is slated to start selling before the ongoing month is out. The price tag is currently set at $273.
