Buffalo Technology, a leading vendor of computer storage products, has recently announced that it has encountered some issues related to the early firmware versions of its product, the DriveStation HD-CEU2. According to the company, the aforementioned product may show strange behavior, which includes certain hibernation or standby modes when the drives are connected to the PCs. In order to help users deal with the issue, the company has released a firmware upgrade, strongly encouraging them to download it.

“Buffalo Technology has discovered that early firmware versions of its product, DriveStation HD-CEU2, may show unintended behavior in combination with certain hibernation or standby modes on connected PCs. In rare instances the DriveStation may become unavailable and/or data may be rendered inaccessible,” the company said in a statement.

According to Buffalo, there are several units that may be affected, including the DriveStation HD-CE320U2, HD-CE500U2, HD-CE640U2, HD-CE750U2, and HD-CE1.0TU2. For users of those products, the storage company has released a new firmware, which can be downloaded following this link. Buffalo claims that the self-installing firmware update should fix the reported issues.

Despite no details on the part of the company, the reported problems appear strangely familiar, much like the ones that have been reported late last year, in regard to some models from the Barracuda line of HDDs, developed by Seagate. In fact, soon after the first issues with the Barracuda drive have been reported, worried owners of Buffalo products took to the company's forum to question if Buffalo was using Seagate drives for its external storage products. Paul, a moderator on the forum, responded that: “Buffalo Technology uses a variety of HDD manufacturers and HDD model numbers. ”

In related news, another user on the company's forum recently reported that his own DriveStation HD-HS750U2 has been causing some problems with “occasional whirring down of the device, followed by a message 'device not recognized'.” Said product isn't mentioned in the recent announcement regarding the products that require a firmware upgrade.
