The Boss opened up his Auckland concert with a strange choice

Many in the music industry would argue that getting praises from an artist who's been playing the field for decades and has become a household name means you've actually made the bit top.

With this in mind, young Kiwi singer Lorde can now pride herself with that distinction as Bruce Springsteen decided to open up his concert in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday, March 1 with a cover of her hit song, “Royals.”

This is a big deal any way you cut it. It's big because this was Bruce's second ever concert in New Zealand and also because he chose to start his set with a chart-topping song by a local young artist (Lorde was born in Auckland some 17 years ago).

Upon starting his concert at the Mt. Smart Stadium, Springsteen showed up on stage and started playing an acoustic version of “Royals” with just his guitar and harmonica. The crowd went wild as he broke out into the first lyrics.

Granted, he had to change some of them, as he dubbed himself “King Bee” instead of “Queen Bee” as Lorde sang in the original. Springsteen gave the song a completely different sound as he turned it into a campfire ballad with a gritty edge, made even fiercer by his husky voice.

This isn't a first for Springsteen who has relied heavily on local talent and their tracks on his recent Australian tour, borrowing songs from such local acts as AC/DC, the Bee Gees and INXS. Expect Lorde's to freak out in the media pretty soon.
