Despite being one of the world's best-known manufacturers of various printing solutions, the Brother company has not been particularly active on the laser copying/printing solutions market. However, it seems that things are about to change, since the company has just announced the release of its first line-up of digital color laser copier/printers, namely the DCP-9000 series, which includes the DCP-9040CN and DCP-9045CDN models.

The two products from the new DCP-9000 Series feature up to 21 pages per minute print speeds for both color and monochrome printing and produce colorful, up to 2400 x 600 dpi output. They also feature built-in USB and Ethernet network connectivity and offer PCL6 and BR-Script3 (PostScript3 compatible) emulations.

The DCP-9040CN represents the basic model of the series, and, besides the aforementioned features, it also provides up to 17 cpm copy speed in both color and monochrome, copy reduction and enlargement from 25% to 400% in 1% increments, as well as a 35-page auto document feeder capacity and 300-sheet paper input capacity (includes 50-sheet multi-purpose tray). Moreover, it supports scanning at interpolated resolutions of up to 19200 x 19200 dpi, features a 2-line LCD display and also comes packed with 64 MB of built-in memory.

On the other hand, the DCP-9045CDN builds upon the platform briefly described above but adds a built-in auto duplex system for two-sided print/copy/scan capabilities, 50-sheet auto document feeder capacity, a legal size platen for scanning and copying legal size documents, an USB Direct Interface (which allows users to print and scan PDF and JPEG files directly from a USB flash memory drive without a PC), PictBridge support for connecting directly to any compatible digital camera, as well as a large 5-line LCD display and 128MB memory standard.

"With the introduction of these products we can now address the needs of small workgroups seeking reliable and easy to use digital color copier and printer technology for their offices," said Jeff Sandler, Director of Marketing for Laser MFC and DCP Products. "In addition to their outstanding digital color copier capabilities, the new DCP-9000 series also deliver color print and scan functionality in an integrated device that is affordable to both own and operate."

The DCP-9040CN will arrive in stores this week for around 600 US dollars, while the DCP-9045CDN will hit the shelves at some point in December for around 700 US dollars, which are some rather fair prices, well within the market limits for this type of business-oriented products.
